    Dr Dhawan is actively involved in tree tissue culture since 1982 and she developed the technique of in vitro nodulation for leguminous tree. She was involved since inception, setting up of a modern tissue culture laboratory at TERI where micropropagation protocols for a large number of species are being continuously developed and improved upon for commercialization. She was actively involved in conceptualization of Project Monitoring Unit (PMU) of DBT's Mission for North-East for Quality Planting Material. As a Coordinator for all the eight states of NE, she is responsible for overall coordination, networking and facilitation, monitoring and evaluation, to conduct regular training programmes for the stakeholders of the mission and to study the change in the economic status of the target population. Dr. Dhawan is the Co-ordinator of DNA (Department of Biotechnology's Natural Resource Awareness Program Club. Dr. Dhawan is also the co-ordinator of the Technology Advancement Unit (TAU), an initiative of ISCB (Indo-Swiss Collaboration in Biotechnology). Dr. Dhawan's recent interest is in the field of algal biotechnology and is Principal Investigator of a project on, "Pilot Scale Demonstration of Algal oil Production" sponsored by Department of Biotechnology (Government of India). She is task force member of number of committees of the Department of Biotechnology including those reviewing projects for rural development and climate change. Apart from being executive council member of five prestigious universities; member of task force of selection panels of DBT, CSIR, DRDO etc., she is presently, Advisor, Bioresources & Biotechnology to the Chief Minister of Assam. Dr. Dhawan is associated with Michigan State University and has been appointed as Adjunct Professor & Consul General (Regional Coordinator) under College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) South Asia Partnership. The responsibilities include building multi-disciplinary terms, multi institutional programmes, proposal development etc. Recently Dr Dhawan has been appointed as Non Executive Director of CABI.

    Honors and Awards
    • First All India Biotech Association (AIBA) award for 1998. The award is given by All India Biotech Association to the best individual scientist for the year in the area of plant tissue culture.
    • Kamal Kumari National Award for Science and Technology for the year 1998. The award is given by Kamal Kumari Foundation for outstanding contribution to science and technology.
    • First Biotech Product and Process Development and Commercialization Award of the Department of Biotechnology for the year 2000. The award is presented for the development of new technology and commercialization with intense research efforts.
