Science has established the existence of climate change and related anthropogenic activity as the leading cause of it. There is a need to understand climate science, the implications on various regions, resources, societies, and to study ways of mitigating its impacts. Role of policies and measures are also equally important. The TERI SAS offers an intensive four-semester MSc programme in Climate Science and Policy intended to imbue present and future professionals with practical and theoretical knowledge in the area of scientific and policy issues relevant to climate change.
WHY STUDY climate science and policy ?
The programme is indeed a need of the hour - an area that requires inventorization, projections, possible ways of mitigating emissions, assessment of possible impacts on humans, habitats, resources, and exploring adaptation options. The programme provides explicit inter-disciplinary knowledge and training in adaptation and mitigation issues and understanding of tools and techniques relevant to the subject. Moreover, it enhances the understanding of national and international policies, laws and regulations applicable to climate science and policy.
WHY STUDY AT TERI SAS ?
The TERI SAS is the first to offer a programme in climate science and policy in India, which is an amalgamation of science and policy related to climate change. The University has been granted a UNESCO Chair in Climate Science and Policy, which is a prestigious award and is given to very few universities across the world. The Chair serves as a means of facilitating collaboration between high-level, internationally-recognized researchers and teaching staff of the University and other institutions, particularly in India and other countries in Asia and the Pacific, as well as in Europe and North America. The present incumbent to the chair is Prof. V Ramanathan of the University of California.
The CSP programme started in 2009 and much has been achieved ever since like 100% placements, involvement of students in the Antarctica research team, getting a UNESCO chair etc. Students of this course get vast exposure to live projects during their coursework in the TERI SAS.
The programme draws pool of resources from TERI working on climate change and the teaching faculty in the TERI SAS is experienced, well-qualified and well-trained in the state of the art tools and techniques. They have exposure to policy making issues, hands- on involvement with decision-makers and negotiators; and have publications to their name in renowned journals and books.
Where will the Degree Take You?
Students will be equipped with the following skills and be ready to take up jobs in climate change sector at the local, national and international level:
- Apply climate-related knowledge to societal problem solving
- Explain the workings of the climate systems and feedback mechanisms
- Communicate effectively with scientists and policymakers on the subject
- Ability to assess climate-related problems in different sectors
- Use variety of climate-related research and analysis methods
- Design appropriate methodologies for impact assessments
- Able to establish, institutionalize arrangements for GHG inventory process
- Assess all relevant options (technological and policy relevant) for mitigating climate change.
After successful completion of the programme students are placed in diverse institutes like:
- Research and development (academic and industrial sectors)
- Consultancies and global think tanks
- National and international NGOs
- Government departments and ministries
Many students go for higher studies/doctoral research in reputed international Universities.
Student Participation / Events Attended
- Ecology Trip: The ecology trips conducted in the first semester accentuated on helping the students understand the basics of the course and the intertwining of these concepts, which is required to achieve a certain depth in the subject. The trip covered various ecosystems present within the city limits and the outskirts of New Delhi. Students visited the Northern Ridge Forest, Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary, forest patches in Jawaharlal Nehru University, and the Aravalli Biodiversity Park.
- Biodiversity Trip: Students of Biodiversity Assessment and Conservation subject visited the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS) in Karnataka to obtain a pragmatic understanding of the ecosystem dynamics of a forest system and also its social aspect. Students were divided into teams and were assigned different projects that in turn helped them in understanding various techniques and methodologies that shaped their comprehension of the framework required in carrying out biodiversity assessment and social analysis.
- Workshop on "Basic Satellite Meteorology and Environmental Application," March 26-28, 2014: A three-day joint training workshop was held on Basic Satellite Meteorology and Environmental Application. Students from the TERI SAS and many other institutes participated in the workshop. Students learnt about various topics such as basics of monsoon forecasting, interpretation of satellite imageries, and identification of weather features in satellite imageries.
The TERI SAS offers 2 scholarships to Indian and international students with the support from sponsors. Scholarship is offered to support outstanding and highly motivated candidates who intend to pursue a masters' programme.
