ANNOUNCEMENTS
Carbon Sequestration refers to the method of capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. It plays a vital role in reducing the impacts of climate change. This study aims to assess the spatio-temporal dynamics of carbon sequestration in Gujarat, India for 2016 to 2023 using the InVEST model. Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2 Level-2A data were used to extract land use/land cover data for 2016 and 2023. A carbon pool values table was created to be used in the InVEST model. The LULC raster layers and the carbon pool data were then incorporated into the InVEST model to generate a net change in carbon stored between 2016 to 2023 in the landscape of Gujarat. The findings reveal a net loss of about 195 million metric tons of carbon from 2016 to 2023. The outcome indicates a shortfall in carbon sequestration in Gujarat and highlights the need for reforestation, land rehabilitation, and conservation efforts for the region.
