ANNOUNCEMENTS
Pumped Storage Plants (PSPs) are an efficient and reliable form of hydroelectric energy storage that play a crucial role in ensuring grid stability and managing the fluctuating supply and demand of electricity. These systems work by utilizing two reservoirs located at different elevations. During periods of low electricity demand, water is pumped from the lower reservoir to the upper one using surplus energy. Conversely, during peak demand, the stored water is released from the upper reservoir to the lower reservoir through turbines, thereby generating electricity using gravitational force.
The present study aims to identify suitable sites for the construction of Pumped Storage Plants in the Bundi district of Rajasthan using geospatial and remotely sensed data. The district, known for its diverse topography and potential for hydroelectric storage, offers a promising landscape for implementing PSPs. The analysis will involve the use of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), land use/land cover data, slope analysis, and proximity to existing infrastructure such as roads and transmission lines to determine optimal PSP locations.
In addition to the technical evaluation, the study also integrates a comprehensive hazard risk assessment, considering the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters such as floods and landslides. The objective is to develop a disaster-resilient infrastructure plan that ensures long-term operational safety and sustainability. To identify the site and establish technical feasibility with utmost accuracy through remote means, significant use of Google Earth pro has been done.
Furthermore, the study will include a conceptual design model of the proposed PSPs, illustrating their working mechanism and key components, such as penstocks, surge tanks, turbines, and control systems. Socio-economic aspects will be assessed using government publications, census data, and district-level development reports to ensure that the project is both environmentally and socially feasible. Comparative analysis of existing PSP Feasibility Reports and Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) will provide valuable insights into best practices and implementation strategies.
