Abstract:

This thesis presents patent analysis in the field biofortification, a green way out of malnutrition through increased levels of micronutrients in staple crops such as rice, wheat, and maize. The thesis focuses on using different types of patent searches such as patentability, freedom-to-operate, and landscape analyses to identify global trends, technological advancements, and gaps that already exist in the field. The research uses advanced search methods and multiple databases to identify areas of innovation in biofortification technologies that includes genetic modification, agronomic management. It analyses global patent activity, putting it into perspective based on the characteristics of field of study. The thesis also traces the competitive landscape by listing major inventors, institutions, assignees and geographical locations leading innovations. The results emphasize the need for a rigorous and criterion-based methodology of patent examination, which, apart from lowering risk for infringement, promotes innovation and biofortification technology commercialization. This thesis puts into perspective how an effective and streamlined patent analysis can inform decision-making in fields like agricultural biofortification and enhance global nutritional security.
