Comparison of water use pattern at three major railway stations in Delhi

Abstract: Water security, water productivity, WASH, these terms define the need for better water management in all sectors. Increasing pressure on available fresh water, integrated approach for better utilization of water. Developing countries leads to industrialization and water demand increases accordingly. Water intensive industries needs to be monitored by policy frame work, water laws, and environmental laws. Industries water demand and supply gap scenario needs conceptual lenses and holistic approach to reduce their gap. Indian railways one of the biggest rail network, providing service to millions of peoples. To provide better service to its customer Indian Railways requires huge infrastructure, energy, man power and last but not the least water. Declining water table is putting pressure on all the industries and Indian railway is one of them. To increase its water efficiency railways entrusted TERI to develop water balance for their entire setup. Three major railway stations in Delhi were taken up as a pilot project to understand water use pattern in railways and hence measures to reduce, conserve and reuse of water. Water audit was conducted to understand the major usage areas and their consumption pattern. Water losses, leakages (apparent & real), transmission losses and over flows from UGT & OHT were also measured to quantify waste water generated from each station. Water samples were collected from identified locations to know water quality pattern of raw as well as waste water.

A detailed study was conducted at all three stations, and comparison of all the study is concluded with revelation interventions were suggested along water saving potential for each railway stations. Water being nonrenewable resource, integrated water management need to take center stage in all industries, among different stake holders and policy makers.
