Solid waste management in select cities of India: case study analysis

Abstract: The purpose of the research is to study the solid waste management scenario in five Indian cities namely Karnal, Gangtok, Bhubnaeshwar, Trichy and Pimpri Chinchwad under WASH project funded by USAID. The fundamental objective of the study is to assess the Service Level Benchmarks in select cities from secondary and primary sources and conducting Key Person Interviews (KPIs). This study also explores the challenges and opportunities in the waste management sector, the potential of these practices and their scope of replication in any other city nationwide. This study draws lessons from good practices and initiatives in urban solid waste management and evaluates them on the key parameters of Sustainability, Scalability and Replicability.
