Study on Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) needful opportunity assessment in India

Abstract: The Study Areas include 7 States (Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana) with areas of about 10, 99, 290 Sq. km. These states include about 158 cities as per the AMRUT Mission. As per AMRUT Mission it is focusing on projects like Water Supply, Sewerage and Septage Management, Storm Drains, Green Spaces and Transportation. But the study focus is Majorly Restricted to Sewerage and Septage Management for the 7 States as mentioned above.
As per Census 2011 Urban Sanitation in India only 32.6% have had connection to sewer system (or) UGD. But, about 54.7% of On-Site Sanitation is not focused and the sludge generated is dumped into farmlands and waterbodies without treatment. It is due to lack of separate Septage Policy, Institutional Framework, no treatment technology for On-Site Sanitation and Guidelines for regular desludging mechanism.
To solve this problem the study was conducted on Faecal Sludge (FS) to see the needful opportunity assessment on Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) for the listed 158 cities. Progressed by data collection in relation to sanitation, Parameters (or) City Selection Criteria’s by reviewing the survey documents of Pilot Study at Devanahalli, Karnataka and after the key analysis was done in specific to all the cities. A final list of 54 cities have are satisfying the key parameter (or) City Selection Criteria’s.
By this Feasibility study I conclude that about 54 cities are feasible for FSM implementation. After a detailed ground survey for these 54 cities FSTP plant can be implemented as it got implemented in pilot study at Devanahalli, Bangalore, and Karnataka.
