Abstract: The project undertaken revolves around the potential of assessing energy efficiency opportunities in buildings. In amidst of energy transition, efficient use of energy is inescapable. While it is essential to add new power generation capacity to meet the nation’s growing energy requirements, it is equally important to look out for options that will help in reducing energy demand for various end-use sectors. This study is carried on the ground of saving energy in buildings, opportunities, barriers and best practices.

The energy efficiency sector is majorly divided in industrial, domestic, agricultural and commercial. Buildings account for approximately 33% of electricity consumption. The new construction is eligible for passive energy efficiency interventions such as day lighting, ventilation and buildings envelop and renewable energy, which in return improves design efficiency. The existing buildings lack the opportunities to improve design efficiency and have major dependency on operational efficiency improvement. The operational energy efficiency is achieved via taking active energy efficiency measures. Active energy measures i.e. the management of energy use through measurement, monitoring, and control; broadly include the products and solutions to improve operational energy efficiency.

The major learning includes energy audit of office space for ISO50001 certification, energy modeling for uncovering the actual reduction in energy consumption after implementation of energy consumption measures, understanding of rating system and available products to become energy efficient, current market of energy efficiency in building sector, barriers to growth of market, way forward to alleviate barriers.
