Abstract: This report is based on my learning during my major project internship in TERI –The Energy and Resources Institute. TERI has undertaken a corporate social responsibility project of ONGC TERI Biotech Limited (OTBL), which is aimed at creating environmental education awareness among school children in Gujarat. This report includes the work undertaken by me as a consultant to the project and the tasks performed and learning received as an outcome of the project implementation process.

Corporate social responsibility, one of the key recommendations that have been made in the new companies’ bill, passed in Rajya Sabha in August 2013, is the mandatory requirement for certain class of companies (i.e. companies having net profit of 5 crore, turnover of 1000 crore and net worth of 50 crore) to spend a minimum of 2 per cent of their average profits in the preceding three years on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) related activities.

ONGC TERI Biotech Limited is the collaboration between of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation of India (ONGC) and The Energy and Resources Institute. Since, OTBL has massive operations in the state of Gujarat, it took initiative to educate the young minds i.e. the children of Gujarat towards environmental issues, concerns related and ways to protect and restore it. Education is recognized as one of the top priorities by the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and environment education is itself has become a necessity in prevailing concerns of climate change, pollution, weather uncertainties and global warming to name a few. Since, it’s a pilot project; it took place in three cities of Gujarat namely Ahmedabad, Ankleshwar and Mehsana wherein the operations of OTBL are more prominent.

This report will highlight the need of environment education to children, phases of implementing the OTBL project, the problems faced for its implementation, outcomes and learning from the project.
