Audit of implementation of the directions issued by Supreme Court committee on road safety in Jaipur and Kota

Abstract: In India, People don’t work with prudence and witness the road accident as above said. The situation on Indian roads is getting worse and road traffic injuries (RTI) have been increasing over the past twenty years. W.H.O. evaluates about the countries with income similar to India have low RTI fatality rates to India. In the meantime many countries much richer than India have high RTI fatality rates to India. This defines that we can’t depend upon the national GDP alone to promote the Road Safety. It becomes critical to ensure improvement in road safety based upon national safety policy

In April 2014, Road Safety committee was formed by the Honorable Supreme Court of India having three members, headed by retired Justice K S Radhakrishnan. The important objective was to analyze and check the enforcement of statutory provisions including Motor Vehicles Act for making roads safer.

The Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety (SCCRS) had sent directions to the states to implement various policies, institutional and infrastructure related measures in an effort to improve the standards of road safety and reduce accidents and fatalities. SCCRS had done detailed road safety audit for the implementation status on road safety directions by states through external expertise consultant.

The objectives were attained with the help of questionnaires, survey-format in Jaipur & Kota. The analysis was done on the data collection to find out current challenges in Jaipur & Kota with respect to IRC standards. There after recommendations were provided to Jaipur & Kota based upon current issues. Thus, the system requires intelligent traffic management system and its practices, enhanced road safety standards, effective road design and policy, safer vehicles, law enforcement, public awareness etc.
