Assessment of understanding level of road safety education and awareness program on road users in rural area

Abstract: With the cities sprawling quickly along with an explosion of urban population, the need for road infrastructure is on an ever increasing high. India has the second largest road network across the world at 5.23 million km. The road network transports more than 60 per cent of all goods in the country and 85 per cent of India’s total passenger traffic. Road transportation has increased over the years and consequently have the road accidents and fatalities up to the point where it has been termed as epidemic of the modern age. Moreover, there is contrasting difference in developed and developing nations pertaining to the issue with the former doing much better to curb down the same. Roads are rendered unsafe due to range of factors namely drivers fault, pedestrian fault, passenger fault, mechanical defect, road design defect, animal on road and light condition however the work focuses on the reasons related to lack of drivers’ responsibility analysed through a mix of literature research and applied behavioural analysis survey. The work analyses the role of education and awareness program in bringing about a change in the same if any and quantifies its impact in a statistical manner. The assessment and evaluation of the awareness program to measure its efficiency and quality is done which is generally ignored, to make sure ineffective campaigns are not allowed to run unchallenged. Understanding of the shortcomings and gaps in the campaign are identified drawings comparative from best practices around the globe. Based on learnings from the assessment, way forward and recommendations are made to make the awareness campaigns more effective in accordance with the National Road Safety Policy.
