Revamping of urban infrastructure and services in DLF city, Gurugram

Abstract: With the increment in industrial and economic growth; Gurugram's population has also increased to 73.7% from 2001 to 2011(Census, 2011). Further, the population has been projected to increase to about 2.3 million by the year 2030 (CEE,2013). With the current pace of urbanization there is an increased pressure on delivering infrastructure and services pertaining to urban environment, water, waste, air quality, transport, housing etc (Gurgaon First, 2015).

DLF being among the prime stakeholders in the city of Gurugram has a vital role in addressing the socio-spatial issues in the city (CII, 2017). In 2017 with the ideation of improving urban environment of the city, DLF Foundation, a philanthropic arm of DLF limited conceived a project termed as Gurugram Rejuvenation Project as a flagship initiative working in the domain of wetland regeneration, air quality monitoring, sustainable urban mobility, road safety liquid and solid waste management, solar lights, biodiversity mapping etc.

The dissertation undertaken, reflects on identification of the issues pertaining to air quality, waste management system and urban greens in DLF City, Gurugram and gives detailed assessment for the services.

The detailed report first sets the background whilst highlighting the issues related to present physical infrastructure and services focusing on drinking water, public transport, Safety and security, urban flooding, waste management etc. The literature review conducted for this section justifies the need for revamping the above mentioned services. In the second section with the detailed methodology and analysis is performed on the issues of (b) Air Quality (AQ), (c) Solid Waste Management (SWM) and (d) Urban Greens (UG) for a residential neighborhood. Each of the sections is based on the primary and secondary data analysis keeping in mind the stakeholder's perspective in decision making process.

The outcome of the study will help in understanding the inter-linkages with AQ, SWM and UG. Henceforth, the learning from each of the detailed methodology will assist in making comprehensive management plan for choosing appropriate methods in order to address the issue.
