Smart and sustainable solutions for the development of sustainable cities in India

Abstract: Smart & Sustainable urban development practice in Indian Context refer to the well-examined urban development tools and exercises for the development of the sustainable Indian towns and cities. The major project includes three such exercises namely, Master Planning, Neighborhood Planning and Smart Town Development. In the project assessment of the Draft Revised Master Plan, 2031, Bengaluru, an attempt made to assess the master plan proposals against sustainability criteria and parameters using the competency test and the viability of the plan and proposal is discussed with the experts. The second project, develop a framework for the smart and sustainable assessment of the neighborhood of Indira Nagar, Bengaluru using the indicator based approach. The smart, sustainable and perception indices – data poetry indicators are identified for the neighborhood of Indira Nagar. The third project, prepare a draft proposal for the development of the smart sustainable town Bidadi at the outskirt of Bengaluru, the proposals are based on the analysis of the demographic changes and investigation of secondary data. The major project works evolve around both the new and old paradigm of the urban planning, with the results and development of the projects it is tried to assess whether the tools of planning are capable enough to implement the smart and sustainable aspect efficiently. The result and discussion conclude that master planning exercise in respect to Bengaluru is failed to incorporate the sustainability aspect at planning – proposal stage irrespective to the background whereas the other two exercises neighborhood planning and town development are found very convenient to incorporate the smart and sustainable approach for urban development.
