Abstract: With rapid urbanisation the demand for resources are increasing continuously. With the demand going up, cities are constantly facing the challenge of supplying water in a sustainable manner. In this study, water quantity abstracted and population density in towns were assessed through the analysis of census data for the years 1991, 2001 and 2011. An attempt has been made to find a relationship between the extent of urban area as detected from remote sensing data and the population distribution. It was found that the total amount of water being abstracted from towns increased by six folds in the 30 years under consideration. During the same period a shift from surface water abstraction to ground water abstraction was observed.
