Abstract: The project abstract hereby presented gives a brief idea of the DeJoule system of Smart Joules Pvt. Ltd. and how it is used to conserve energy in HVAC systems. The DeJoule BMS, otherwise known as a Building Automation System (BAS), is installed in buildings for controlling and monitoring the HVAC components comprising of electrical and mechanical equipments. HVAC system involves a central cooling/ heating system, lighting, ventilation and ducting, cooling towers and AHU. The process initiates with a step by step evaluation of customer sites like hospitals, hotels involving energy audits including review of historical electrical log book records of the site, measurements of water flows and area temperatures that are conducted to check performance and operation of various equipment’s in HVAC system using installation of Smart EM, flow meters and temperature sensors. After rigorous data collection for a month or two, the critical areas are identified and are subjected to retrofitting. Interventions like replacement of air conditioning units according to BEE star ratings, installation of VFD for motor pumping and fan modulation of cooling towers and AHU’s, installation of LED lighting, re-structuring the ventilation systems are considered. Once the retrofitting and other activities are completed, the energy consumption goes down by a figure of 8-15% on an average. The control and monitoring of maximum energy consuming devices like chillers, AHU’s etc. of the building is achieved through electronic (JouleBox, Joule IO Sense, Joule IO Controller, JouleLogger and JouleSense- Devices manufactured by Smart Joules Pvt. Ltd.) devices, electrical (EMs, different sensors, VFDs) devices and electro-mechanical (Valve, Damper, Actuator) devices which tend to provide a complete control over the energy scenario of the building. Daily evaluation of temperatures of different areas of the hospital including the factor of occupancy at that particular time gives a relation between them for a respective season/month of the year. This relation is used as the logic behind the devices functioning. These devices communicate to each other over digital and analog ports, to ensure maximum control and efficiency. It creates a domain in which all devices are interconnected over a single platform (Smart Joules domain). A person sitting at any place in the world has the ability to control his site remotely and access any information regarding the energy consumption of the whole building. The customers are promised a saving of 10% from the baseline. Operating schedule and the output required from HVAC components like chillers, AHU, CT are modulated based on requirement and sensitivity of the particular area. Altogether, many fields and domains are considered in order to have the maximum output from the system and thereby attaining maximum energy efficiency. Hence being robust, timid and effective, the DeJoule system provides an efficient way to monitor, control and evaluate the energy consumption of any building. The energy savings thus recorded gives a proof in real time and has therefore a large scope of implementation.
