Abstract: The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises play a crucial role in the overall industrial economy of the country. The major benefit of the sector is its employability at low capital cost. As per the Annual Report of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), 29 million MSME units provide direct employment to about 70 million personnel. The MSME sector accounts for about 45 % of India‟s manufacturing output and around 40% of the total exports of the country. Despite all the supportive elements, the factor that is holding back MSME‟s development is its energy consumption. Energy is an essential input; its utilization efficiency will not only help in improving the competitiveness of MSMEs but will also aid in reducing energy linked environmental pollution. Level of energy efficiency in small industries depends not only on the production technology but also on the non-technological factors. There is a huge scope of improving efficiency of energy consumption in these industries. This study, hence, aims to identify the scope of energy conservation in micro enterprises in India and the factors that are leading to such high energy consumption. This study will be supported by both secondary research such as articles, documentations, etc. as well as through primary research like personal interviews from various institutions and small and micro enterprises using structured questionnaire.
