Abstract:

The major criticality in functioning of various wastewater treatment technologies was critically assessed by auditing and reviewing their performance, working efficiency and operability in an onsite and offsite study. The feasibility and applicability along with main obstruction in design, engineering and operation-maintenance was thus highlighted. The study found that choice of appropriate technology was neglected extensively in most of treatment plants, thus compromising quality of treatment. The importance of sustainability in wastewater treatment systems was examined through the parameters of footprint, CAPEX, OPEX (including energy), sensitivity to shocks and ease of operation maintenance along with net revenue generated from recycled water in terms of reduced dependency on fresh water for secondary usage. In-depth understanding of sustainability was established through review studies. A Case study of conversion of an existing SBR to EASS was analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. The study found the EAAS to be working with better efficiency in least CAPEX, OPEX i.e. 56% reduction in energy and 26% less footprint for that particular scale of treatment in comparison to SBR. A similar hypothesis was found to be narrated through the analysis of existing industrial data of 500 KLD STP using different technologies. Further, An ETP of 250 KLD for food industry was designed using anaerobic digestion followed by 2 stage aerobic EAAS process for client from south Asian country. A 25 MLD STP was designed as 5 x 5000 KLD for client in Middle East country. Subsequently 2 STPs 120 KLD and 350 KLD was designed for client in Pune, India. All the STP designs incorporated EAAS technology on the basis of study’s recommendation and observations in order to create robust and sustainable wastewater treatment solution.
