Abstract:

What minerals are essential to the transition to clean energy? How will energy and mineral demand grow in the future? And what are the consequences for foreign relations? This paper reflects on the geopolitics of minerals for clean energy technology. Motivated by fears about climate change, the loss of fossil fuel stocks, economic competitiveness and creativity, policymakers around the world have set ambitious renewable energy goals. This enhanced the need for such minerals. Around the same time, the international economy is in transition to a multipolar society, and state capitalist patterns are becoming more prevalent. This paper explores how import-dependent and mineral-producing countries react to these changes and the consequences for the balance of cooperation and conflict.”
