Abstract:

This study aims to estimate the annual monetary benefit to individuals from reduced health damages due to absence in exposure to Covid-19 in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, India. A Health Production Function Approach is used to quantify the human health cost of Covid-19 using two outcomes: The loss in workdays due to morbidity and the demand for mitigation activities. The survey was conducted using a pre-tested questionnaire of 381 respondents in Delhi, for the period May 2020 to April 2021. Our results show that the annual monetary benefit to an individual from saving workdays is INR. 390 (US$ 5.25), while the annual monetary benefit from reduced medical expenditure is INR. 39,744 (US$ 535) per person. The total annual monetary benefit from absence in exposure to Covid-19 for the entire working population of Delhi is estimated to be INR. 224.23 Billion (US$ 3.01 Billion).
