Abstract:

The Millennium Alliance (MA) is an open forum that brings together people from all walks of life to discover and scale creative solutions being produced in India to address development issues that benefit people at the bottom of the pyramid in India and throughout the world.

Launched in 2012, The MA offers a unique approach to development that is both innovative and impact-oriented. It is in response to a wave of entrepreneurship that is bringing new and imaginative solutions to long-standing societal issues. MA works as a network to bring together various actors in India's social innovation ecosystem, such as social innovators, philanthropy organisations, social venture capitalists, angel investors, donors, service providers, and corporate foundations, to stimulate and facilitate financial and non-financial contributions from the private and public sectors in support of development. MA is unique in its approach as it brings together and synergizes the efforts of the government, multilateral organizations and the private sector to provide support to social development initiatives. This support comes through in the form of funding, capacity building, partnerships and handholding.

Thinkthrough Consulting (TTC) is engaged with the Millennium Alliance Program to undertake monitoring of its awardee projects. The purpose is to validate results of various projects by review of its progress reports. TTC is also involved in supporting awardees to develop their initial work plans and monitoring plans in the formats prescribed and establish regular communication on reporting. TTC helps validate results and generate lessons for dissemination and learning to further improve and strengthen M&E of the program.

There is a misconception in the general understanding of M&E systems, that what works well at a simple project level, should be applicable at the larger complex programme level. Project level M&E systems are relatively well established in both theory and practice, while complex M&E systems have to be moulded according to the overall programme. the M&E structures will continue to evolve to incorporate and encapsulate new programmatic changes and relevant themes. This process of continuous learning has enabled MA to understand opportunities for the future, so as to ensure that greater support be provided to the Indian social innovation ecosystem to scale-up and become a global powerhouse.
