Abstract:

The construction of the Vizhinjam International Port is progressing in full swing. Overcoming objections, especially with regard to the land acquisition, the government of Kerala started special purpose vehicle, named Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) in 2015. Further it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gujarat based Adani Port Private Limited for the Rs 7,525 core. There are a lot of environmental and human rights issues came after starting the construction of this project. Because of changes in sea currents and coastline erosion caused, the fish harvest of fishermen changes as a result of port construction. This has an impact on their daily revenue patterns. One of the consequences of dredging and port building is irregular income. That is to say, income insecurity poses a threat to fishermen's livelihood. The the arrival of the port has had a significant impact on the availability of fish. It resulted in significant revenue losses, particularly during the monsoon season. This dissertation aims to address the human rights issues faced by the fisherman community due to the land acquisition process.
