Abstract:

An environmental audit is a type of evaluation intended to identify environmental compliance and management system implementation gaps, along with related corrective actions. The audit reveals details about the activities of a company and its compliance with environmental regulations. Audit information is presented to the management team and employees. An environmental audit evaluates and quantifies the environmental performance. It identifies compliance problems or management system implementation issues. Environmental audit is a growth area which has received little attention in the auditing literature. There is currently no mandatory requirement for companies to undergo environmental audit, although pressures on them to do so are growing, and there are no generally accepted standards regulating the nature of audit work. In the absence of standards, the views of individual practitioners will have a decisive effect on the form of the audit. Summarizes the results of a questionnaire survey of environmental consultants aimed at ascertaining what kind of audit work they do and what their views are about the nature of the audit. It examines the amount of harm or risk of injury that may be posed by the assessed entity and determines the types of pollution being produced by looking at a broad range of locations, activities, and procedures. The information compiled from these factors to determine what changes would need to be installed for compliance.

Examines the possibility that practitioners from different backgrounds have fundamentally different approaches to the audit. Suggests that practitioners′ views are often contradictory, with little perception of the tension between the two roles suggested for audit. It appears that environmental audit is at a crucial stage of development as a discipline and its future will be shaped by the standards that the new profession evolves.

Environmental Audits play a significant role in sustainability. It keeps companies and organizations accountable by examining their practices and determining what measures need to be installed to make sure these groups are following the proper regulations.
