Abstract:

The increasing world hunger and the issue of food security are interlinked. The problem magnifies when we talk about the vulnerable communities of the hill and mountain regions. The mountain communities suffer from the issue of malnutrition, wasting, stunting and underweight and other health issues. There are many factors for the same ranging from socio-economic factors to lack of food accessibility. Hence it becomes important to study the vulnerable communities of the mountains. The study conducted examines the existing food consumption pattern in the hill region of Assam wrt the rural-urban study. The dietary diversity score was obtained for each village in the study by using FAO ‘Household Dietary Diversity Score’ and FGDs and the results were analysed. The study further looks into the impact of traditional food on the diets of the Karbi Community of Assam and how it adds to the overall dietary diversity existing in the hills of Assam. The study showed consumption of rice to be the highest followed by consumption of root vegetable, meat and fish and the least consumption of fruits.
