Abstract:

Currently the natural gas sector is known to be acting as the transition fuel from conventional energy towards a sustainable energy. Hence it becomes necessary to maintain the long term sustainability of gas sector. Given that India has currently just one gas industry which is Gas Authortiy of India Limited (GAIL). This study thus focusses on decarbonizing a GAIL factory based out of Vaghodia, Vadodara, Gujarat. The study was conducted on-site to understand the technical nitty-gritties of the company. The methodology tool adopted for the decarbonization was GreenCo rating tool, as this is the rating in which the baseline was already established by the factory. The factory was rated silver based on its decarbonization strategies and 10 parameters mentioned in GreenCo. However there was still scope of further decarbonization which could also better the GreenCo rating for the company, from silver to platinum. Thus feasible recommendations were made based on the current status, and the gap assessment parameter-wise. Parameters such as energy efficiency, water conservation, renewable energy, green supply chain, GHG mitigation and waste management were help on priority. Rest of the parameters were omitted since the weightage gap was less than 20 points, thus assuming less significant to the GreenCo ratings. A questionnaire was also prepared to better understand the gaps and scope of improvement in the supply chain which was answered by the Senior Manager (Technical Services) followed by which there was another questionnaire that was taken to understand the management preparedness and supplier engagement at GAIL in which it was known that there needs to be policy level change to implement the green procurement mandate while other way through which change could be made without government intervention was by interacting with the suppliers, understanding their problems and solving them.
