Abstract:

Climate change, characterized by long-term shifts in weather patterns and increased extreme events, has profound implications for global ecosystems and human societies. This study explores the intricate link between climate change and nutrition, focusing on Haryana, India, a region already facing significant environmental and nutritional challenges. Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and extreme weather events disrupt agricultural production, threatening food security by affecting the availability, accessibility, utilization, and stability of nutritious food. Historical and projected climate data indicate severe impacts on staple crops like rice and wheat, essential for Haryana’s food security. The interplay of climate change with pre-existing nutritional deficiencies exacerbates health issues, particularly among vulnerable populations. Our literature review highlights the broader regional impacts, including increased heatwaves, altered precipitation patterns, and groundwater depletion. The study underscores the urgent need for adaptive strategies to mitigate climate impacts on agriculture, ensuring food security and sustainable livelihoods. By examining Haryana’s specific vulnerabilities, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the global climate-nutrition nexus, offering insights into potential mitigation and adaptation pathways.
