Abstract:

The mining industry in India plays a vital role in meeting the global demand for essential raw materials such as iron ore which is crucial for steel production. With most iron ore deposits situated in sensitive areas like forests, the industry faces a critical stage where sustainable practices and environmental conservation are paramount for its long-term viability. The study conducts a comprehensive analysis of the Environmental Management Systems and Sustainable Reporting practices employed at the Iron Ore Mines operated by Steel Authority of India Limited. As a significant player in the steel manufacturing sector, SAIL recognizes the imperative to integrate environmental considerations into its operations, especially in iron ore extraction, where the potential environmental impacts are substantial.

The primary analysis examines SAIL’s EMS implementation and SR practices, focusing on policies governing environmental management, sustainable reporting, and key performance indicators reflecting both Environmental, Social, and Governance and Economic performances. Additionally, the study evaluates the Social Impact Assessment and community development initiatives through Corporate Social Responsibility programs. The methodology involves a detailed content analysis of SAIL’s Sustainability and Annual Reports, focusing on transparency, adherence to Global Reporting Initiative Core Standards, and integration of ESG criteria into sustainability initiatives.

Findings reveal that SAIL demonstrates a commitment to proactive environmental management through its EMS adhering to ISO 14001 standards, the challenges persist in mitigating environmental impacts during mining operational activities. Environmental monitoring data highlights significant variations in air pollutant concentrations, emphasizing the need for comprehensive pollution control measures and water quality reveals particulate pollution in effluents water, emphasizing the need for enhanced water treatment. SAIL’s SR practices adhere to GRI Standards and SEBI regulations, reinforcing corporate credibility and stakeholder trust. However, the limited availability of quantitative KPIs highlights the need for stronger emphasis on qualitative assessments to understand their ESG & Economic performances.

The study also underscores SAIL's significant contributions to community development through CSR initiatives, indicating a sound commitment to improving local socio-economic conditions. By addressing the existing gaps and limitations, SAIL can reinforce its commitment to sustainable mining practices, leading the way in responsible mining while contributing to environmental conservation and socio-economic development. This study emphasizes the importance of integrating sustainable practices and robust environmental management systems in mining operations to ensure long-term viability and positive societal impact.
