Abstract: Corporate social responsibility in the most rudimentary terms means that
companies incorporate social and environmental considerations in the conduct
of their business operations. In recent times the concept of corporate social
responsibility has gained a lot of importance with companies establishing
separate teams to conceptualize and strategize their plans for corporate social
responsibility. With the new Indian legislation mandating Corporate Social
Responsibility coming into place, the debates and discussions around Corporate
Social Responsibility have come to the forefront and businesses are recognising
their responsibility towards the society. CSR has transformed from traditional
philanthropic notions to becoming something similar to a sustainable business
strategy. This study attempts to examine the CSR activities undertaken by the top
100 BSE listed companies. The companies conduct CSR activities in accordance
with the activities listed in Schedule VII of the Act and that forms the basis of the
analysis of the CSR activities of the company.
