Abstract:

Energy storage is the growing market in the whole world, every company new or old, who is in the field of renewables or electric vehicles, are looking for more reliable and affordable storage technology. For renewables, Energy storage plays a huge rule as it helps in curbing down the infirmity and limited hours operation problems of solar and wind due to which consumers lean towards the gas or coal-based power-blocks. For Electric Vehicles, batteries share around 50-60 percent of its cost therefore it’s an urgent need of high reliable, efficient and low-cost solutions.

Lithium-ion Battery plays a big role in the current industry as an energy storage device. As a material, it is highly energy and power dense and ability to have different chemistry with Nickel, Aluminum, Magnesium, Titanate etc., plus continuous decline in the pricing of the battery packs make if more affordable yet reliable for different application.

In India, Lithium-ion cells are imported from different countries like China, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and U.S.A. China holds the maximum share in importing the lithium-cell in India followed by Korea, Taiwan and Japan. These cells are then Assemble in India in different configuration in terms of Voltage and Capacity (Ampere-hour). Also, they are segregated in terms of packaging i.e. prismatic, cylindrical or pouch packing. BMS used in the packs are mostly manufacture by the companies itself. For assembling of the lithium-ion packs, there should be a proper facility with precise machinery to get a desired output and operation. If these process (for assembling of lithium-ion packs) are not followed, then battery will not perform according to the specification. For targeting electric vehicles and Grid Storage every company is now focusing on higher capacity packs of lithium-ion.
