Abstract:

With the ever-increasing pressure of seasonal employment and other social and environmental factors, there is a pressing need of alternative livelihood opportunities for the women in the hills of Uttarakhand. The study tries to understand the need to change the source of livelihood from conventional agriculture to garment production for the women of Bhilangna block of Tehri Garhwal. The study focuses on the socio-economic impact of the livelihood intervention in the lives of women beneficiaries through soft-skill development. The area of focus for our study is Bhilangna block of Tehri Garhwal, wherein there is a high rate of male out-migration to cities in search of work leading to women heading the households, exercising highly restricted ownership on natural resources but due to traditional cultural and social norms their access to the social and economic opportunities were still restricted. The paper tries to understand the socio-cultural and economic changes in the lives of the beneficiaries and the prospect of alternative livelihood for them.
