Understanding social exclusion among elderly population: a study based on elderly self-help group intervention in Sapotra block of Karauli district

Abstract:

Background: Changing demographic pattern has resulted into population in India. The fertility are reducing, life expectancy and migration are constantly increasing making elderly people vulnerable to various form of exclusion. As the society becomes self-dependent and individualistic in nature role of aged individuals in family become marginalised. Exclusion in elderly can be classified into various form of material, community interaction, and civil participation, psychological and social aspects. The research assess the Elderly Self Help Group Model and its role in reducing different form of exclusion in Sapotra block of Karauli district.

Method: The research uses systematic literature review for understanding different domain of exclusion - it uses scoping review framework developed by Hilary Arksey & Lisa O’Malley. In second part of the study – It evaluate the activities of ESHGs in reducing isolation and increasing inclusion – It assess the activities of ESHGs with the help of theory of Change and it evaluates ESHGs using OECD DAC Criteria.

Result: In India problem of ageing and exclusion are associated with lack material possession, self-identity, and feminization of elderly. As the life expectancy of women is higher and prevalence of elderly women being widowed is high in later life. The community based model focus on material inclusion, community participation and provide health inclusion but involvement of working population in community participation model of ESHGs are negligible.

Limitation: The research focuses only on men and women, it ignores the third gender while analyzing gender based exclusion. The research identifies absence of holistic framework in understanding exclusion with reference to elderly in context of Rajasthan. The study is designed on the basis of taking first 60 literature identified using keyword such as Social Exclusion, After life, Community participation, ESHGs and deprivation in Elderly. The research uses baseline data and secondary data for analysis.
