Abstract:

Menstrual cycle is an important process in the lives of women. It is a natural biological growth procedure. Various absorbents such as cloth, menstrual products, etc. are used during this cycle to soak up the blood flow. A large proportion of women (64%) use sanitary pads during their menstruating cycle which leads to waste generation of approximately 12 billion pads in a year. One of the concerns emerging from this issue is how this menstrual waste is disposed of by the consumer of such products. Therefore, this study tries to analyze the behaviour of consumer towards menstrual waste disposal and the factors affecting such behaviour. The study uses cluster sampling method in order to collect primary data from adolescent girls and women in Delhi. Logit regression model is used to analyze the results and draw conclusions from the study. The results show that majority of women in Delhi do not dispose of the menstrual waste generated by them in a proper and hygienic manner as suggested under Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2016.

Key words: Menstrual products, menstrual waste disposal, Solid Waste Management.
