Abstract:

Achieving a net-zero global society by 2050 and limiting global warming has become a primary objective globally in light of the urgent threat posed by climate change. This underscores the necessity of transforming the challenging industrial sectors, Cement being one of them. For communities everywhere, cement is an essential component of building and construction materials. But because of how energy-intensive its production process is and how much it contributes to the possibility of man-made global warming, making it the second largest emitter in the world, it needs to be reduced right away.

In this effort, implementing abatement measures to reduce its carbon emissions is critical for the cement sector and necessitates a comprehensive plan with efficient decarbonisation levers. The objective of this research is to investigate the application of a net-zero approach and analyse the different levers that promote decarbonisation in the cement industry. The study's main goal is to examine the essential elements and objectives of a thorough net-zero plan for the cement industry. It looks at the frameworks of regulations and policies that might propel decarbonisation initiatives, taking into account how well they work to advance sustainable practices.

In addition, the study explores the challenges and barriers associated with the widespread use of technologies like CCUS. It looks into how measures like switching to AFRs, electrification, reducing Clinker cement ratio can be incorporated into Indian Cement industries to attain zero net scenario. This study attempts to give a thorough overview of the current status of the cement sector's decarbonisation levers present globally, emissions profile of Indian cement companies, current best practices practiced by Top tier Indian Companies to mitigate those emissions, assessment of the gaps that exists in Indian context and how measures can be implemented to help Indian cement companies accelerate their progress towards Net Zero by using a descriptive research approach.
