The study investigates the intersection of corporate environmental sustainability practices and performance, focusing on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, energy consumption, and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies. The research aims to understand how leading companies, particularly those within the Nifty 50 index in India, are addressing climate change through their corporate strategies and operations. It highlights the importance of these practices in the broader context of sustainable development and global efforts to mitigate climate change. The research begins by contextualizing the increasing importance of sustainability in corporate strategies, driven by heightened consumer awareness and regulatory pressures. It emphasizes the critical role that businesses play in mitigating climate change, particularly in emerging markets like India, which face unique challenges and opportunities in their transition to a low carbon economy.
A significant focus of the study is the analysis of firm-level data on GHG emissions and energy consumption. The findings highlight sectoral differences in emission intensities and underscore the potential of renewable energy investments to reduce carbon footprints. The study also examines the effectiveness of various ESG strategies in promoting environmental sustainability. It reveals that while some companies have made substantial progress in reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency, there is considerable variation in the effectiveness and transparency of their ESG initiatives. Furthermore, the study suggests that comparative analyses between Indian companies and their international counterparts could help identify best practices and areas for improvement.
Subsequently, the study highlights the critical need for integrated approaches to manage GHG emissions and energy consumption through effective ESG strategies and technological advancements. It calls for improved data transparency, better access to detailed operational information, and more precise quantification of the impacts of ESG initiatives. Policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers must continue to collaborate and innovate to drive meaningful progress towards environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
