Abstract:

India’s rapidly growing energy demand presents a complex challenge at the intersection of economic development and climate responsibility. Driven by population growth, accelerated urbanization, and industrial expansion, the country’s energy consumption patterns are undergoing a significant transformation. This study critically examines the evolving dynamics of energy demand in India and evaluates the implications for its energy mix and climate commitments.

Despite substantial progress in renewable energy deployment, fossil fuels continue to dominate the national energy portfolio. An analysis of historical trends and projected growth indicates that, without accelerated interventions, conventional energy sources are likely to retain a major share in meeting future demand. This raises concerns regarding greenhouse gas emissions, energy security, and the alignment of India’s energy trajectory with its long-term climate goals. The study also evaluates India’s progress toward reaching its goal of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030. While recent policy measures and infrastructure development efforts signal strong intent, meeting this ambition will require sustained investment, robust policy implementation, and enhanced coordination across multiple stakeholders. In addition, renewable energy integration with storage technology and grid resiliency will be necessary to maintain both sustainability and reliability.

The findings highlight the urgent need for a balanced approach that supports economic growth while minimizing environmental impact. Strengthening energy efficiency, accelerating clean energy transitions, and enhancing institutional capacity are critical to managing the dual imperatives of development and decarbonization. This study contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable energy planning by providing insights into how India can navigate its rising energy needs without compromising its climate objectives.
