Abstract:

This study is motivated by a general mindset of a business that is how a nuance thing introduced (any change, a need for compliance) can become an opportunity and can open doors for healthy financial flow as well as give profits. These can serve as levers for both profitability and sustainability, even in emission-intensive sectors such as oil and gas. Employing a multiple-case study approach, the study examines ESG and sustainability strategies implemented by ten leading Indian and international oil and gas companies. These firms represent early adopters and innovators in integrating environmental stewardship with operational and financial performance.

The research aims to achieve three core objectives. First, it compares ESG strategy initiatives of Indian oil and gas companies with their international counterparts to identify patterns, gaps, and best practices. Second, it evaluates how operational efficiency initiatives contribute to reduced environmental impacts—particularly in terms of energy savings, water use, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions—while also enhancing financial outcomes. Third, it explores the relationship between ESG adoption and financial performance, focusing on how such strategies can be leveraged for cost savings, regulatory incentives, and long-term business growth.

The findings provide compelling evidence that sustainability, when embedded within core operations and investment decisions, can create measurable environmental and financial value. This reinforces the view that ESG is not merely a compliance burden but a strategic asset in transforming the oil and gas sector toward a more resilient and profitable future.
