ANNOUNCEMENTS
In todays, world Electric Vehicles (EVs) are a crucial solution to carbon emitted by the transportation sector which is one of the major contributor to the Carbon emissions. The government has introduced several policies including FAME I & II, the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP), and more recent initiatives like the PM E-Drive scheme to encourage the adoption of EVs. Nonetheless, in spite of these efforts, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) remains constrained due to persistent consumer concerns and practical obstacles, including elevated upfront costs, insufficient charging facilities, and a general lack of understanding about existing policies.
This research examines the relationship between government policy initiatives and consumer behavior within the Indian electric vehicle (EV) sector. Utilizing data from a primary survey of 203 participants from Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 cities, along with insights from secondary literature and policy evaluations, the study explores four main objectives: the effects of government policies, consumer perceptions and obstacles, the alignment of policy intentions with expectations, and strategies to address current gaps. Descriptive statistics, a synergy-mismatch matrix, and correlation analysis were used to evaluate the results.
The findings indicate a significant disparity between the provisions outlined in policies and the public's comprehension or engagement with them. Merely 21.3% of those surveyed indicated that they had taken advantage of subsidies, while almost half were not aware of the government incentives for electric vehicles (EVs). The issue of charging infrastructure was identified as a primary concern, with 75% of respondents citing it as an obstacle. Nevertheless, motivations related to environmental benefits and long-term financial savings emerged as crucial factors driving interest in EVs. This study underscores the necessity for enhanced communication, easier access to incentives, development of localized infrastructure, and behavioral nudges to foster trust in EV technology. This research offers practical insights for policymakers aiming to adjust their strategies and facilitate a more inclusive, accessible, and effective transition to electric vehicles in India.
