Abstract:

The PVC-coated leather manufacturing sector is a notable contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, primarily due to coal combustion and electricity consumption. In light of escalating climate challenges, the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into corporate strategies and sustainability reporting has become imperative. This research investigates opportunities to enhance sustainability performance in the sector through decarbonization strategies, comprehensive ESG baseline assessments aligned with recognized global frameworks including the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as the Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR), an emerging reporting standard. Improved engagement with sustainability rating platforms such as Eco Vadis is also explored.

Biomass co-firing trials were conducted in coal-fired boilers, and a 40% biomass blending ratio was identified as the optimal solution balancing operational feasibility, financial viability, and seasonal supply chain constraints. Analysis of the existing energy audit report revealed system inefficiencies and validated the effectiveness of previously implemented energy-saving measures, while highlighting additional opportunities for optimization. A detailed ESG baseline assessment was conducted, mapping material topics against recognized frameworks, which uncovered both qualitative and quantitative gaps. Furthermore, a self-assessment as part of the Ecovadis 2025 sustainability assessment submission identified the “Measures” indicator under the Labor and Human Rights theme as a priority area for improving the facility’s Ecovadis score.

Advancing sustainability in manufacturing demands targeted efforts to reduce carbon emissions, align ESG practices with international standards, and participate in third-party sustainability assessments. This integrated approach supports continuous improvement and reinforces long-term sustainability performance.
