Abstract:

This dissertation explores the complex connection between ESG disclosure and financial performance with the case study of Unilever, one of the leading companies in the consumer goods sector, with regards to its subsidiary, Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL). The research explores the rising integration of ESG factors in company strategy and investment analysis as part of a global shift towards responsible business conduct. Despite widespread ESG reporting, empirical evidence regarding financial impact remains mixed due to different methodologies, sectoral differences, and regional dynamics.

Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, it combines qualitative analysis of Unilever's sustainability and financial reports for 2020-2024 with quantitative time-series trend analysis. The study analyses the correlation between ESG disclosures on emission reduction and sustainable sourcing with short-term and long-term financial results. The inclusion of HUL provides context for ESG implementation in the emerging markets.

The findings reveal that robust ESG reporting improves financial transparency, builds investor trust and augments long-term profitability. Unilever's strategic ESG initiatives - such as a 40% reduction in GHG emissions - and sourcing 89% of palm oil sustainably align closely with financial growth and market expansion. The study shows that sustainable brands contribute more than 75% to Unilever's business growth, validating the value-generating potential of ESG practices.

This study helps us understand how transparent sustainability practices drive competitive advantage and long-term value in the consumer goods industry. It makes the case for standardized, sector-specific ESG standards and methodologies, and regionally sensitive strategies in global corporate structures. This dissertation contributes to the conversation about the role of ESG in driving sustainable growth and performance in different market contexts.
