ANNOUNCEMENTS
The study conducted comprehensive benchmarking of Oil India Limited’s (OIL) sustainability reporting practices, focusing on three key frameworks: the Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). A comparative analysis was performed on OIL’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosures relative to four other Indian oil and gas companies—ONGC, IOCL, RIL, and Cairn Oil & Gas—as well as the international leader, Equinor. The evaluation utilized four methodological approaches: content analysis, benchmarking matrix development, Excel-based tracking, and narrative interpretation, all based on fiscal year 2023–24 data.
The research revealed that while OIL exhibits basic compliance with the BRSR framework, there are notable gaps in reporting Scope 3 emissions, stakeholder grievance metrics, biodiversity disclosures, and third-party assurance. In contrast, RIL and Equinor demonstrated a stronger alignment with international standards, featuring forward-looking disclosures, lifecycle assessments, and climate risk strategies. Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) like ONGC and IOCL echoed OIL's performance in social indicators but outperformed it in stakeholder engagement and biodiversity metrics.
The study highlighted systemic overlaps, inconsistencies, and redundancies in disclosures across the various frameworks, while also identifying best practices that could serve as benchmarks for OIL. Strategic recommendations were developed to enhance OIL’s ESG transparency and to align its sustainability narrative with global expectations. The findings emphasize the necessity of transitioning from compliance-driven reporting to performance-oriented sustainability governance, particularly in carbon-intensive sectors. This work aims to inform both corporate strategy and regulatory improvements as India progresses toward greater ESG maturity.
