Abstract:

This research explores the intersection of gender inequality and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the lens of the UN Global Compact’s Forward Faster initiative. Drawing on secondary data from sources such as the UN, World Bank, and ILO, it reveals how women and girls disproportionately bear the burdens of development challenges, slowing global progress on the SDGs.

Gender disparities remain stark across critical domains. Women globally earn around 20% less than men and are overrepresented in informal, low paid, and unpaid labor sectors. They spend over 200 million hours daily collecting water time that could otherwise support education, health, or income generation. Climate change further exacerbates these inequalities, disproportionately impacting women’s livelihoods, health, and safety, especially in low income and rural settings. Meanwhile, women led enterprises face a staggering US$1.9 trillion global credit gap, limiting their economic potential.

Despite these gaps, there is strong evidence that gender equity accelerates SDG progress. Closing the gender employment gap could increase global GDP per capita by nearly 20%. Gender diverse corporate leadership correlates with stronger financial performance, and gender lens investors consistently meet their financial targets.

The Forward Faster framework identifies five action areas for corporate leadership: Gender, Climate, Living Wage, Water, and Finance. This study emphasizes the need for gender-responsive climate strategies, universal WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) access, equitable pay policies, and inclusive financial models. Indian corporates, through ESG and CSR commitments, have a crucial role to play in this transformation.

Ultimately, aligning business strategy and policy with gender equality is essential for inclusive, sustainable development. This research highlights that integrating intersectional gender perspectives into corporate practices is not just an ethical imperative but also a driver of resilience, innovation, and economic growth.
