Abstract:

India is nearing a demographic shift towards an ageing population, with urbanisation and changing family structures creating new economic and social security challenges. Addressing these issues requires deeper, cross-sectoral research to identify trends and capture potential areas for guiding sustainable development. Progress in geriatric health research in India has been slow, mainly due to inadequate technological infrastructure and the need for better elder health information systems (Sen & Ingman, 2021). Recognising the role of social determinants in long-term care is essential, and coordinated action across sectors is needed to streamline these services in India.

This study aims to explore the challenges and opportunities within elder care services. Using the triangulation framework of research, this study uses both quantitative and qualitative analyses, supplemented by a review of existing literature. The scope of this study is limited to the urban areas of Delhi. Age, living arrangement and preference for old age homes (institutional care) or elder care services are the three key indicators investigated in this study to understand their effect on the quality of life in older adults. Further, it gives insights into emerging trends and evolving demands of the elder care sector. At the end of the study, key findings are supplemented with strategies to develop a sustainable approach towards eldercare systems while addressing the gaps in geriatric care research.
