Abstract:

Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) represent a transformative approach to renewable energy generation by integrating solar power systems directly into the fabric of buildings, enabling multifunctional structures that simultaneously serve as energy producers and architectural elements. This report provides a detailed overview of BIPV technologies, applications, and global trends, emphasizing the substantial success of BIPV adoption in European countries driven by strong policy support, financial incentives, and technological innovation. Despite India’s abundant solar potential, BIPV deployment remains limited due to challenges including low market awareness, high initial costs, regulatory barriers, supply chain constraints, and climatic considerations. This study critically examines these challenges and proposes actionable recommendations to promote mainstreaming of BIPV in India, such as policy reforms, capacity building, financial mechanisms, and demonstration projects. The findings aim to inform stakeholders and policymakers to facilitate sustainable urban development through widespread adoption of BIPV systems in India’s rapidly evolving energy landscape.
