Both Darjeeling MP Raju Bista and Siliguri MLA Dr Shankar Ghosh congratulated Dr Eklabya Sharma on being awarded the Padma Shri. While Mr Bista extended his heartiest congratulations to Dr Eklabya Sharma on social media, Dr Ghosh today met Dr Sharma at his Siliguri residence.
Dr Sharma, originally from St Mary’s in Kurseong, had previously served as the deputy director general at International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Kathmandu. He was also the head and the founding scientist incharge of GB Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development, Sikkim, Darjeeling MP Mr Bista said.
Dr Sharma is the chairperson of Science Advisory Committee of GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment and a fellow of Indian National Science Academy. He had joined as the vice chancellor of TERI School of Advanced Studies, previously known as TERI University, Delhi. Currently, he is serving as the Strategic Advisor and Distinguished Senior Fellow in Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), Bangalore

The first state-of-the-art food testing laboratory in entire North East will be coming up in Guwahati within the next year.
The food testing laboratory is being built by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), a leading think tank involved in conducting research for sustainable development in the country.
Informing of the project, TERI-NE director Dr Dipankar Saharia said, "This will be first such equipped lab for food testing in the entire North East. It will be under the Food Processing Industry ministry of the Centre."He said, construction work has already started at the TERI campus in Guwahati and is likely to be operational within one year, adding that getting necessary certifications for the lab to open requires time.
Dr Saharia said the lab will be equipped to test various food and beverages, like water, soft drinks, tea.
Besides the lab, the Guwahati campus of Delhi-based TERI University will also be completed within two years, the director informed.
The state government has already provided land near IIT-Guwahati at Amingaon area and earth-filing work has also started, he said, adding that it will start functioning within two years.
Dr Saharia said, "The Guwahati campus will have the same courses as the main varsity, but focus will be on courses dealing with water, natural resources, biotechnology, etc."UNI SG AKM
